I've always felt that marketing promotions were broadly applied but not very well thought out. Promotional marketing in some ways is a pretty good idea for a wide variety of things. You can give out pens, calculators, or other little trinkets with your brand name on it. This is a way to spend little money on an advertising campaign that will generate some degree of name recognition. The question of how effective these promotional marketing campaigns are is open, however. If I open my pen drawer, I'll find dozens of promotional pens and erasers in there, but I couldn't name a single brand offhand. Unless you sell something like stationary which people associate with pens, these type of promotional giveaways are nothing but a waste of money.

In my opinion and I always tell my clients this marketing promotions should only be done for special purposes. Guerrilla marketing can work wonderfully depending on what kind of product you sell, but the marketing promotion must be carefully tailored. Just going out into a public square and holding a contest or giving away a product will not generate any business for you at all. You need to think strategically.

One of my favorite places to do marketing promotions is at nightclubs and bars. When people are drinking, they'll do what they can to win anything. Whether you are giving away shot glasses, food, drink mixers, or just T-shirts, people will get excited about your marketing promotion. If they get to come home with a souvenir of their night, they'll forever associate it with the fun of going out drinking with friends. This is what successful marketing promotions aim to do: create those kinds of positive associations around your product or brand name.

There are important things to master when you plan to become your own boss.

Yeah: Do you know how to promote your business?

When I was going through college, owning a business was the dream.
I spent so much time worrying about how to start a business, I didn't know what to do with it once I had one.

I have some rather specialized knowledge, although it is less specialized nowadays.

Basically, I'm a technological wizard. I can program, build computers, And all the rest of it.
I wanted to work as a Self-employed computer consultant.

Although I knew that I could make a lot more money in the industry, it seemed worth the sacrifice to be able to set my own hours and be my own boss.

Unfortunately, I knew nothing about how to promote my business.

A lot of people take courses on how to promote your business, but I naively assumed that, since I understood what I was doing with computers, I would be able to get clients.

This was a very serious mistake.
I did have a few connections, and that is key to promoting your business.

However, those connections were quickly exhausted.
They were simply not enough to make a decent living for me.

Some of the best strategies for how to promote your business were things that I was already aware of.
Ever since I had been starting a business, I had maintained a good web page with excellent keyword optimized content.

I did get a fair bit of web traffic, but it didn't seem to be translating into clients.
Then I figured out the problem: I hadn't used any niche marketing.

Understanding how to promote your business starts with understanding the nature of your business.
In my case, because I was a small player, I needed to have a small local market.

I could never make my mark promoting my business to a broad, national clientele.
There were just simply too many bigger people around.

When I marketed myself as an expert located in the area, however, the calls started coming in.

I put up flyers all over the neighborhood, made connections at local technology club meetings, and even went to high schools to see if they had any trouble in their computer labs.
It took me about six months, but at that point I finally had a steady client base.

I've become comfortable with it over the last couple of years, but it's certainly not my background.

In my opinion, the key is promoting a website in the real world.
You see, national coverage and national attention are very difficult to dig but local coverage is comparably easy.

Basically, the key is to include the URL in all of your materials and have a great street team together.

Having some web-based giveaways is so much the better.

That will get people looking at your website, and once they're looking, you have gone halfway to winning the battle.

Many people will tell me and many people already have that my advice doesn't help them in their line of business.

What they don't realize is that that's the whole point.
