If you work from home, you've a lot of freedoms your on-site friends don't enjoy. Quite often, you set your own hours and schedule your work to your convenience. You can work in your jammies at midnight if it suits you. There're no scheduled coffee breaks or anyone breathing down your neck. You save money, because you don't have to drive anywhere, you don't need an extensive, expensive wardrobe and you'll never miss a school play because of conflicting hours. So how good can it get?

Many surveys, conducted with an audience of work from home people, invariably reveal that the number one problem issue is getting your family members to believe that you actually have a job! Sure, they know you derive an income, sitting at your computer. The problem is, if you're at home, you're therefore viewed as available for interruption at any time. Although it's nice to be able to chat every now and then, you know you must exercise discipline and adhere to a schedule, no matter how loosely structured it may be. You can see how your paradisaical work from home can easily become a situation where you squeeze your work in between family demands. Handling this in a way which satisfies everyone requires some finesse on your part. On the one hand, you don't want to be inflexible, shutting off all communication during your work hours. On the other hand, you've got to maintain your focus and get your work done. If you let it happen, you'll end up running yourself ragged, trying to accommodate everyone.
Write down and display the new rules!
The solution which seems to work best is to simply lay down the basic rules at the outset. Get everyone together and explain that when you're working, they must pretend that you're essentially not home, except in certain instances. In other words, your beloved child needs to find the socks and wife might venture into the kitchen and brew a pot of Fair Trade coffee for herself.
Once you've established the ground rules for your work from home job, get everyone to buy in to this arrangement. You'll doubtless need to give them a few reminders, but eventually it'll work out, without ruffled feathers or hurt feelings. You can also teach your kids a work ethic, by your good example. Your wife will survive quite nicely, too.

To conclude: if you can afford work an a specific where you can have a quiet atmosphere to keep concentration at its highest level. A quiet atmosphere in my case means no TV, no door rings and no kids playing around. I love my kids but I also working in a silent room to work more efficiently. When I have my work done? I spent my free time playing or reading with my kids. There're times for work and times for recreation.
